Julian Argüelles soprano, tenor, baritone and contra bass saxophones; clarinet and bass clarinet; piccolo, flute and alto flute; mouth harp, saxophone percussion, prepared piano and voice.

Inner Voices is a multi-tracked recording comprising a mix of entirely improvised pieces and arranged tracks. It features studio devices to create loops as well as what Arguelles calls “saxophone percussion” – the tapping, banging and scraping parts of the saxophone or reeds to give a rhythmic texture. Though this may sound like an album not for the feint hearted, it is, as Jazzwise Magazine points out “an album teeming with emotion…. as an improviser he wears his heart on his sleeve”. Argüelles combines influences as diverse as folk, classical, world, dance and jazz, like, says the magazine “they’ve always belonged together”.

Inner Voices is a companion to Argüelles 1996 duo album Scapes (with his brother, drummer Steven Argüelles). Of that album, Jazz UK commented “Julian has pulled off the rare feat of producing something which is both completely different and equally brilliant”.

“A fascinating glimpse into the world of one of the most expressive jazz saxophonists this country has produced in the last quarter of a century”
